Technical Guidance for High Density Fibreboard Application

Understanding the physical properties of HDF is essential for proper tool selection and finishing. Below are the most common questions regarding our High Density Fibreboard panels.

While both are made from wood fibers and resin, HDF is manufactured under higher pressure and heat to reach a much greater density, typically exceeding 800kg/m³. This results in a thinner, stronger, and harder board compared to standard MDF. This extra density provides better screw-holding power, higher moisture resistance, and a significantly smoother surface that is ideal for thin-film laminates and high-end paint finishes.

Because HDF is significantly harder and more abrasive than standard particle board or MDF, we highly recommend using high-quality carbide or diamond-tipped (PCD) tooling. Standard steel blades will dull quickly when processing HDF. Using the correct feed speeds and sharp bits will ensure clean edges and prevent the heat buildup that can lead to scorching on the machined surfaces of the board.

Absolutely. Due to its high impact resistance and dimensional stability, HDF is the industry-standard core for laminate flooring and is widely used for high-end wall cladding in commercial spaces. Its ability to resist indentation and moisture makes it a superior choice for any application where the panels will be subject to physical wear or varying humidity levels.

Yes, HDF is compatible with standard industrial PVAL glues. However, because the surface is so dense and less porous than standard wood, it may require a slightly longer set time to allow the adhesive to create a mechanical bond. For laminating HDF, ensure that your pressure settings are correctly calibrated to account for the board's rigidity, ensuring a uniform bond across the entire surface area.

HDF should always be stored flat on a level pallet or dunnage, kept off the ground in a dry, climate-controlled environment. Because it is thinner and denser than standard boards, it is less prone to bowing but can still be affected by extreme changes in humidity. Allowing the panels to acclimate to your shop environment for 48 hours before machining will yield the most consistent and predictable results for your production team.
