Properly installing curved wall substrates requires careful attention to framing and grain orientation. We have compiled these frequently asked questions to help trade professionals optimize their workflow for architectural radius projects.

For a standard floor-to-ceiling curved wall, you should use "column grain" (long-grain) sheets. This allows the 8-foot dimension of the panel to wrap vertically around the radius of the wall. If your curve is a horizontal feature like a low partition or a barrel-shaped bulkhead, "barrel grain" (cross-grain) would be the more appropriate choice for efficient installation.

The spacing of the internal ribs or studs depends on the tightness of the radius and the thickness of the substrate being used. Generally, for a standard 1/4-inch flexible panel, ribs should be spaced every 6 to 12 inches to prevent flat spots and ensure a smooth, continuous curve. Tighter radii will require closer spacing to maintain the integrity of the arc.

Yes, our curved wall substrates provide a very stable foundation for thin, flexible stone veneers. It is critical to ensure that the substrate is securely fastened to a rigid internal frame and that you use a high-quality adhesive recommended for both the wood core and the stone face to prevent delamination as the materials adjust to environmental changes.

To achieve a seamless look across a large curved wall, it is best to stagger the joints if you are using multiple layers of substrate. For the final face layer, ensure the panels meet over a solid rib and use a high-quality filler or tape system if you are painting, or a continuous veneer sheet if you are finishing with wood, to make the transition invisible.

While a vacuum press is excellent for creating self-supporting curved parts, most curved wall panels are applied directly to a built-in-place frame on the job site. In these cases, mechanical fasteners and high-strength adhesives are used to secure the panel to the ribs. The tension of the flexible plywood will hold the shape as the adhesive cures, resulting in a permanent and stable curved wall.
