What You’ll Need

Hovr Floating Shelf Installation Hardware

Bits Required

  • 17/64″ HSS steel drill bit
  • 5/16″ #18 HSS H3 tap bit
  • Epoxy glue, if using the glue installation method

Tools Required

  • Tape measure
  • Electric drill
  • Level
  • Stud finder
  • Router or table saw

For professional cabinetry shops, a router or dado blade setup will usually provide the cleanest and most consistent channel.

Step 1: Create the Channel in the Shelf

The first step is to create a recessed channel in the back of the shelf for the female bracket. This can be done with a hand chisel, router, or table saw with a dado blade.

The manufacturer recommends recessing the top of the bracket approximately 0.40 mm and leaving about 0.40 mm of overhang at the bottom. This allows the bracket to embed slightly into the drywall and helps reduce rocking after installation.

Step 2: Attach the Female Bracket

Use the 1-1/4″ pan head screws to fasten the female bracket to the shelf. Use one screw per hole and make sure the bracket sits straight in the routed channel.

Be careful not to overtighten, especially when working with MDF, particleboard, or veneered panels.

Step 3: Drill Set Screw Holes

There are two options for securing the bracket system:

Option 1: Set Screws

Drill and tap the holes in the bottom of the shelf to accept the threaded set screws. This provides a strong mechanical connection and is ideal for professional installations.

Option 2: Epoxy

Epoxy can also be used to secure the brackets together. However, epoxy-only installations are more permanent and may reduce the load the shelf can handle.

For the strongest result, the guide recommends combining set screws and epoxy.

Step 4: Prepare the Male Bracket

Locate a minimum of two studs and mark their locations on the male bracket. Drill the required holes using the 3/16″ bit.

The bracket is not predrilled because stud spacing varies from job to job. Be sure to drill holes centred on the top and bottom guide lines provided on the bracket.

Step 5: Attach the Male Bracket to the Wall

Fasten the male bracket to the wall using #8 x 2-1/2″ pan head screws.

  1. Start with one top screw, but do not fully tighten it.
  2. Use a level to position the bracket correctly.
  3. Install the second top screw into another stud.
  4. Tighten both screws carefully.
  5. Install the lower screws into each stud.

Important: Do not overtighten the screws. If the bracket bends, it can prevent the male and female brackets from engaging properly and may compromise the installation.

Step 6: Combine Both Brackets

Tilt the shelf downward at approximately a 15-degree angle. Hook the upper part of the female bracket onto the upper part of the male bracket, then lower the shelf into place until the grooves interlock.

If the brackets do not fully engage right away, apply two or three firm taps at the back of the shelf where the brackets sit. This should help the shelf snap fully into place.

Step 7: Secure the Brackets Together

Insert the set screws into the predrilled and tapped holes. Start by hand until they are finger tight, then finish tightening with the supplied Allen key.

Epoxy can also be used instead of set screws, but combining both methods provides the strongest installation.

Important Hovr Bracket Installation Tip: Keep the Wall Bracket Straight

The male bracket must remain straight and flush for the system to engage correctly. If the bracket is bent to match a bowed wall, the installation may fail.

The guide notes that up to a 1/4″ gap between the back of the male bracket and the wall is acceptable without compromising holding capacity. In these situations, shimming behind the bracket is typically better than bending it.

Why Hovr Brackets Work Well for Cabinet Shops

For cabinetry manufacturers and installers, the Hovr system offers several practical advantages:
